Udupi, Aug 28: Abdul Razack (42), son of the late Bavu Beary, residing at Mallar Kombagudde of Kaup and his wife Julekha Ayesha (38) have been arrested by the Kaup police on charges of trafficking hemp.

The arrested Razak is said to have worked as a member of the dreaded gang of Ripper Chandran, which had held the coastal districts in the grip of fear a couple of decades ago. The police said that Razak was facing several cases in connection with robbery and some of them have been disposed off. He had also undergone imprisonment in one of the cases.  The couple is allegedly involved with selling hemp all over the district. Two kilograms of the banned substance valued at about Rs 10,000, was confiscated by the police from the couple.

The police stopped a M80 two-wheeler which was moving suspiciously in front of the Hosa Marigudi temple of Kaup at around 7.30 pm on Tuesday August 26. The couple did not possess valid vehicle documents. The Kaup police station in charge Joy Antony and crime branch sub-inspector Chandrashekhar with support from other personnel, conducted the search operation, basing on reliable information that the arrested persons were carrying ganja delivered to them by Papu from Udaya Hotel in Kottigehara, Chikmagalur. The couple was remanded to judicial custody till September 10 by a court on Wednesday August 27.

Abdul Razak is involved with hemp trade for the last five years and was once arrested by the district crime intelligence bureau. He was targeting the youth of Udupi, Brahmavar, Santekatte, Manipal, Muloor, Belapur, Kunjoor etc., in the district and had built up a network to sell the drug.

Even though the police had tried to watch his movements in the past upon suspicion, he had succeeded in escaping, presumably by handing over the consignment to his wife. The police strongly suspect his involvement with several offences including vehicle thefts masterminded by Abubakker.

The lives of students, grooming to be future responsible youths, are made miserable thanks to such heinous drug traders. But the punishment for such dreaded act is fine of a paltry sum and imprisonment for a small duration. Back from jail, they are more confident to continue their trade. Could Lawmakers make anything in this regard?
