Mangalore: IMA Delegation Seeks Protection to Doctors

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 5: Dakshina Kannada district unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) led a delegation to the district-in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar recently and impressed upon him and the state government, through a memorandum, to ensure safety and protection for doctors and hospitals from the ulterior designs of unscrupulous elements.

The delegation was taken to the minister, in view of the attack on a hospital and its staff by a mob subsequent to the death of a patient admitted there for treatment, after her attempt to commit suicide.

IMA secretary Dr Manjunath Shenoy has apprehended in the memorandum that such acts might dissuade the doctors from taking proactive measures to save a patient and instead, resort to defensive practices which might lead to unnecessary escalation of treatment costs. The association, while urging the government to immediately take stern steps against the miscreants in the above case, has also pressed the government to take steps to promulgate an ordinance on the lines of Andhra Pradesh, prohibiting such assaults and treating them as cognizable, non-bailable offences.

IMA president Dr Satish Bhandary, director of Fr Muller Medical College Fr Stany Tauro and several office-bearers of IMA were present.

The act is more of political than medical or social in nature. Politicians have taught rowdies to take law in their hands without fear.
