Independiente beat Corinthians in Copa Libertadores tie

Sao Paulo (Brazil), May 3 (IANS): Argentine club Independiente boosted their chances of entering the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores football tournament with a 2-1 victory over Brazilian outfit Corinthians here.

Independiente adopted an attacking style from the very beginning of Wednesday evening's match, with their winger Martin Benitez scoring the first goal in the opening minute, reports EFE news agency.

In the 24th minute, Corinthians' forward Angel Romero scored an own goal to double the visitors' lead.

He made amends for his error in the 31st minute by finding his teammate Jadson with an excellent through ball. Jadson found the Independiente net with an accurate finish to reduce the deficit for the Brazilian team.

In the second half, Independiente played more calmly and controlled the ball well, while the hosts were in a hurry to find the equaliser.

Although the Argentines secured victory on Wednesday, Corinthians remain the leaders of Group G with seven points.

They are followed by Independiente and Venezuelan outfit Deportivo Lara with six points each. Millonarios of Colombia are at the bottom with four points.
