Bhubaneswar, Sep 7: All entry points to riot-ravaged Kandhamal district of Orissa were sealed and security tightened in view of a special prayer meeting to be held later today to pay homage to slain VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati.

Additional security forces were sent for deployment in the communally-sensitive district ahead of the proposed 'Kalas Puja' of Laxmanananda on Sunday at Chakapada where he had an ashram, official sources said.

"Entry points to Kandhamal were sealed to stop entry of anti social elements to the district as a step to prevent any untoward incident during a 'smruti sabha' being held in the memory of the Swamiji at Jalespeta," Y V Krishna, sub-collector of Baliguda, under which the area falls, said.

Laxmananda's followers performed a 'yagna' during the day at the ashram in Jalespeta, where he was gunned down on the night of August 23.

Patrolling was intensified in all sensitive areas and day curfew, clamped after the killing continued at Baliguda, K Nuagaon and Raikia as a precautionary measure, continued though it was relaxed for varied periods at six other places, official sources said.

Kandhamal collector Krishan Kumar said the situation at Tikabali, where police wielded the stick on a group of women trying to set ablaze a relief camp at Tikabali on Thursday, was 'tense but under control'. No fresh incident was reported as security personnel were deployed in strength there.

These BJP governments are a curse for our country .Almost every day you read or learn about the persecution of minorities in general and of late christians in particular. And these crimes are taking place only in BJP ruled states. This is the latest to come to light after the Orissa carnage. Four orphaned babies adopted by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity (MC) have become unwitting pawns in the hands of fascist and fundamentalist forces .

The babies, now under police custody, are in a government hospital at Durg in Chattisgarh after VHP and Bajrang Dal activists snatched them from nuns on board a train. “But for the intervention of the police, we would have been burnt alive by the mob,” one of the sisters, Mamta, claimed. Two sisters of the MC along with two women aides were on September 5 travelling on a train from Raipur to Indore to hand over the babies to a care center there,

Catholic Bishops Conference of India spokesperson Babu Joseph said in a statement here. Joseph said that when the train arrived at Bhilai Power House Station, a mob of some 300 belonging to VHP and Bajrang Dal jumped on board, pulled the sisters out and snatched the babies as well as documents related to their adoption. The attackers who included some women tried to run away with the babies, but the railway police arrived in time to rescue the infants and transfer them to the Durg hospital. And when two local sisters arrived at the station to offer help, the mob stopped their ambulance, punctured its tyres and attacked one of them, Joseph said. Sister Mamta of Raipur thanked the police for helping them get back the documents of the orphans. “Our documents are in order though Bajrang Dal people claim they are false,” she said, adding: “We are praying. They (police) have assured us that the documents are in order and the children will be returned to us.”

Besides taking up the matter with the governor, the MC had sought an appointment with chief minister Raman Singh to apprise him of the attack, she said. Church sources allege that the Bajrang Dal men who enjoy political clout in the BJP-ruled state are pressuring the police not to hand the children back to the sisters. We have to only wait and watch what more is in store in the coming days. The next could be in our own neighbourhood after the Bondel episode.
