Bengaluru, May 8: The Supreme Court (SC) came to the rescue of a girl from Hyderabad Karnataka region in the state, who had approached the court seeking to annul her marriage which was performed forcefully by her parents. The father of the girl happens to be a former state minister who is contesting the assembly election this year.

The application moved by the girl came up for hearing before a three-member bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra on Monday May 7. The bench, also comprising of judges, Justice A M Khanvilkar and Justice D Y Chandrachud, upheld her request and said that the lady cannot be forced to be bound by a marriage for which she was not agreeable, and that she is free to lead her life as per her wishes.

The Chief Justice, who sought the girl's opinion at the court during the hearing, said that annulment of marriage does not fall under the jurisdiction of SC and therefore asked her to move the application in designated court. The court ordered to hand over all the documents pertaining to the lady to her legal counsel. Advocate Indira Jaisingh representing the lady said that her client has completed her studies and she wants to work at Bengaluru. She sought directions from the court to ensure that she does not face any problems from her parents.

The SC observed that parents of the girl, family of her husband and other relatives do not have any right to interfere with her life.
