Puttur: Jeep rams into stationary lorry - one dies, four injured

Puttur, May 12: After a jeep rammed into a truck which had been parked by the roadside, a woman lost her life. Four others travelling by the car were injured. The incident happened late night on Friday May 11 near the inspection bungalow at Darbe here.

Vedavathi (78), a retired teacher and wife of the late Venkappa Gowda from Kanike in Aryapu village in the taluk became the victim of this accident. Veadavathi's son, Balakrihna, who works for Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation here and was driving the jeep at the time of the accident, and three children were injured, it is gathered. While Balakrishna, who had suffered serious injuries was shifted to a hospital at Mangaluru, the three children were admitted into a private hospital at Puttur.

The family had been to Venoor to attend a programme organized in the house of Vedavathi's daughter there, it is learnt. The family was returning home after the programme at night when the accident happened. The front portion of the jeep was badly mangled in the accident.

A case about the accident was registered in the traffic police station here.

It transpires that BJP candidate from here, Sanjeeva Matandoor, who was returning home after seeking votes, rushed to the help of the accident victims after witnessing their plight. He arranged for ambulance and transported injured persons in his vehicle. Matandoor said that when he was moving home late night, he saw that injured Balakrishna was holding his mother and the children were shouting for help in vain as movement of vehicles and people was sparse. He said he then arranged to admit the injured into hospital.
