Mangaluru, Jun 1: Chief whip of state legislative assembly Ivan D'Souza met chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and submitted a request for a grant of Rs 50 crore from natural calamities fund to tide over overall loss sustained due to the recent heavy rain witnesses in the districts.

“Though the district administrations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have estimated a loss of Rs 20 crore in the recent incessant rains that caused loss of human and animal lives, damages to roads, walls and public property, considering the calamities that are likely to happen in the future, and expenditure for repairs of houses, the compensation should be paid at market rates,” urged Ivan D'Souza in the appeal.

“There are reports that state canals are taken over. The matter should be investigated and action should be taken to ensure that rain water and drainage flows freely,” he said.

Ivan D'Souza informed that the chief minister said to the deputy commissioners that the compensation paid as directred by NDRS is too less. “Centres for testing blood should be opened to prevent spread of epidemic due to excessive rain and expert doctors should be appointed in them,” he urged in the appeal.
