Bengaluru, Jun 7: 3WAYSTE, a French environmental technology company and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) undertook a technical feasibility study on waste management in Karnataka's Bengaluru city on Thursday, June 7.

The study will emphasize on the ways to deploy its waste management technology to the local conditions of the city. It will be carried out in collaboration with BBMP and French government under its FASEP programme.

The launch meeting at BBMP was attended by BBMP commissioner Maheshwara Rao, joint commissioner, waste management Safaraz Khan, Bengaluru mayor Sampath Raj, the French ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler and additional chief secretary of the urban development department Mahendra Jain on Wednesday.

3WAYSTE CEO Robert Filipp expressed, "Waste management is a recognized priority by the government and local authorities. We are delighted to be part of the solution with our patented technology, which is capable of recovering more than 90 percent of any waste and converting it into energy, compost and raw materials. We believe the Bengaluru project can serve as a model showcase for other cities."

3Wayste had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the BBMP to set up a waste-to-energy plant in Chikkanagamangala.

The city is expected to produce about 3,500-4,000 tonnes of waste every day and has the capacity to process about 2,600 tonnes consistently. The plant is expected to process 500 tonnes of garbage every day and the energy created here will be sold to the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited.

Mahendra Jain admitted, "Bengaluru desperately needs waste-to-energy solution. Only then will the value of waste as a resource be realized. The new waste processing system will significantly improve the situation in Bengaluru and we are working closely with 3WAYSTE to start operations as quickly as possible. There will be a demand for waste and waste will find its way to the plants rather than stay in public places."

French Ambassador Alexandre Ziegler said, "The theme for 2018 beat plastic pollution reminds us that solid waste management is the need of the hour, especially in order to fight climate change. I am deeply convinced that we need to move towards a circular economy-one that doesn't accept any material as waste."

The study is expected to conclude by the year-end.

As of now, 3WAYSTE has presence in France, the site of the original plant and area of the Technology Center, Canada, La Reunion and now in Bengaluru.

Other ventures in India and different areas are being worked on.
