Mangaluru, Aug 18: A ginger seller along the Bikarnakatte-Kaikamba Road was seen washing the produce in muddy water collected in a roadside pothole, raising concerns over food hygiene and the safe handling of vegetables sold to the public.
The seller was seen using dirty, stagnant water accumulated in the pothole to wash the ginger before displaying it for sale. The unhygienic practice has raised concerns among commuters and passersby who witnessed the incident.
Using stagnant roadside water to wash food items can expose produce to dirt, bacteria and other contaminants, particularly when the water is in contact with mud and road debris. Fresh produce intended for public consumption should be handled with clean water and kept away from potentially contaminated surfaces.

The incident has also drawn attention to the need for vendors to maintain proper hygiene while handling food items, especially produce sold directly to consumers. Clean washing water, hygienic handling and proper storage are essential to minimise the risk of contamination.
The incident has further highlighted the need for greater awareness among roadside vendors about basic food safety practices, as well as regular monitoring to ensure that food sold in public places is handled under hygienic conditions.
