Mumbai, Jul 2 (IT): Close on the heels of the mob lynching incident in Dhule in Maharshtra, another incident of mob vigilantism has come to light in Malegaon in Nashik. A couple was targetted by an angry mob after rumours of them being child kidnappers did the rounds. The couple was saved after quick police action. The police hid the couple in a house to protect them from the mob fury.

At 11.30 pm on Sunday, Malegaon police got a call informing them about a couple with a child. Rumours of them being child traffickers were doing rounds. Police quickly rushed to Ali Akbar road.

By this time, a mob had gathered outside the building in which the couple had taken shelter.

The furious mob started pelting stones at the building and even at the police which moved in quickly to protect the couple. Additional forces were rushed to the spot as the mob overturned a police vehicle and the couple was rescued from the clutches of irate mob after a lathi-charge. The police have moved the couple to Malegaon camp police station.

The inspector in-charge of Azad Nagar police station confirmed the incident.

The couple hails from Parbhani district in Maharashtra. Police are trying to ascertain the identity of the couple and of the child.

A case has been registered against unknown people for ransacking the police vehicle.
