Bangalore: Speed Governor Issue - Vehicles Strike Called off

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Oct 1: On September 30, the last date specified by the state High Court for the commercial vehicles to fit speed governors, the Supreme Court extended the deadline for the same, by one month. Earlier, the State High Court had directed the state government to ensure that all the commercial vehicles running in the state are fitted with speed governors, before September 30.

Some of the transport unions and also the state government had approached the Supreme Court against this order. The Supreme Court, which sought the central government's initiatives on this issue, has adjourned hearing in the case, to December.

The Supreme Court also extended by one month, the date by which the old buses are required as per the High Court orders. to fit speed governors to their vehicles, to be able to secure renewal of their fitness certificates.

The commercial vehicles unions, which had given call for an indefinite strike from Wednesday September 30 on the issue of speed governors, have withdrawn the strike. As a result, the consumers, information technology companies, commuters, vegetable growers etc., who were fearing that severe adverse affects of the strike would hit them by way of spiraling prices and shortage of transport vehicles, have heaved a sigh of relief. The reprieve however, is temporary. Unless the central government intervenes in the issue and frames uniform rules across the country, the issue will come haunting the state again after a month.
