by Fr Thomas Santosh, Bellary

Bellary, Oct 2: The citizens of Bellary launched “Souhardha Vedike”, a forum for social harmony at the historical Gandhi Statue, in the heart of the city, on the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Oct. 2.

The newly started Forum launched under the leadership of the Bishop of Bellary, Henry D’Souza, intends to “promote a more vibrant civil society by upholding Human Rights and democratic ethos among all the citizens”.

“It is totally unacceptable for people to trample the Human Rights of fellow citizens and commit criminal acts such killing innocent people, desecration of holy places, and subjecting women and children to humiliation and indignity,” declared Bishop D’Souza in his inaugural address, decrying communal violence in India.

The Bishop urged all the political leaders “to rise above petty politics and protect the lives and properties of citizens whom they have vowed to serve”.

“Promotion of communal harmony and the national integration by fostering a culture of peace and harmony”, is the primary aim of the organization.

Other than fostering goodwill among the various sections of the society, the Forum intends to promote the protection of the environment and judicious use of the limited natural resources.

The Forum has also drawn up a plan to organize inter-religious meets, prayer meetings and celebration of national festivals to promote national integration.

I order to fight the menace of violence, terrorism and religious bigotry, the Forum has launched peace clubs 11 schools to “foster a culture of peace among students”. The representatives from such Peace Clubs from the city schools took an oath on the occasion to “shed all hatred and to foster peace in young minds.”

Many citizens who took part in the function felt that the Form is a need of the hour and it should spread its branches to the other parts of India.

We Mangloreans and all those who have associated with Bishop Henry in Mangalore know the dynamism and the leadership taken by him in various activities and events. I compliment and congratulate the leadership shown by Bishop Henry in uniting people from all Religions, and all walks of life under a single umbrella “ Souhardha Vedike”. Let the call given by this Vedike be implemented by all the Political Parties and strongly condemn the evil, violence like Religious and social terrorism shameful acts of rape and murder to children, women and nuns destruction, vandalizing and desecrating public and religious assets. It is time for us to focus and understand the values in human life and place our nation first above our religion and call ourselves as Indians first in this free and democratic country.

As true and patriotic Indian, it is high time that we shun all evil and violence and rise above party politics and work sincerely for the welfare of the nation. May our esteemed Politicians of our country understand the present need and be upright, honest and work sincerely towards the goal of progress and development of this nation and stop cutting ribbons and giving false assurances and promises of grant and aid to the people and the community at large. Let’s all work towards the goal of promoting peace and harmony among all brethren. When the nation rises from strength to strength in progress and development may the entire world around us know that our culture and heritage is strong with Dharma and ahimsa and then truly like our earlier Honorable Prime-Minister Mr. Vajpayee we all can say “Mera Bharath Mahan”.
