Mangalore: Corporators Tour at Taxpayers Cost, Ignore Civic Issues

Mangalore: Corporators Tour at Taxpayers Cost, Ignore Civic Issues
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (MM/CN)

Mangalore, Oct 20: Never ending water woes, improper garbage disposal, stinking drainages, potholes on city roads—these are all part and parcel of life in our very own ‘Kudla’. And there are no corporators around to listen to anyone’s complaints because they are all away on tour!

Of course, at the expense of the taxpayers, who else? The loan received from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), for improving infrastructure and other essential services, is the source of the funds for their tour. Eventually it is the local citizens who have to shoulder the burden of the loan repayment.

A group of corporators have recently returned after a tour of Hyderabad, while two other groups headed for Cochin and Chennai. Interestingly, there is no rivalry between the Congress and ruling BJP, who are at loggerheads during municipal meetings, when it comes to good times such as these.

Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP) has undertaken work on water supply and drainage in the city with the ADB loan and sixty percent of the work is completed. The corporation has to approve the bill for the work carried out by KUDCEMP. If the municipal body finds any irregularity in the work, only the corporators can come to the rescue of KUDCEMP in getting them their payment. Hence, KUDCEMP has organized the tours for the corporators, claim sources.

City mayor Ganesh Hosabettu says that the corporators were sent to Cochin and Chennai to study the municipal works done in these two cities by KUDCEMP. If this is true, they would have taken technical persons and experts with them to study the situation, opine sources. Interestingly, the relatives of the corporators have also joined them in their tours !

I appreciate the wonderful & truthful comments made by Neil D'Cunha, Mangalore/Abu Dhabi & Gerald D' Silva, Mangalore/Dubai. This is not only shocking but they are 100% right. I also noticed the same dirty/filthy/corrupted officials all around the MCC. Let the Mayor, Corporators & rest MCC staff clean themselves, their areas, offices, toilets & surroundings first. I have seen today in DD News that President is touring to North East & Western States for presenting awards under Gramin Vikas Programmes to villagers.

Each house & school must have a toilet as per the Union Rural Development Ministry's Vikas Programmes. Our MCC must get a worst award for Mangalore Infrastructure & Basic Facilities Development. We have highly qualified world class Engineers, Architects who can design and supervise the basic needs of the Mangalore City. Does these corporators qualified to copy the infrastructures of Hyderabad, Cochin & Chennai Cities? Or whether these corporators accompnied with qualified Engineers? This is nothing but as Francis P Noronha, Mangalore correctly commented "MAKE HAY WHEN THE SUN SHINES". This is nothing but wastage of taxpayers hard earned money by the MCC.

Can you please read the message in between the lines? Do you think our Corporators have gone to Cochin, Hyderabad, and Chennai for tour organised by the Corporation with the intention of serving & planning the Mangalore City Corporation? If it so, they should have first conducted workshop for themselves in Mangalore how to improve their quality of work and contribute to the area.

This has not done. We are in business world and here they will discuss business about how much each will benefit from the project money sanctioned. This is one of the truths. Otherwise how come Corporators day by day becomes fat and fat with thick bank balance. Money has no religion and loyalty to any political party.

In July during my vacations I had the golden opportunity to visit our great MCC office. In search of an officer I made an excellent tour of all the floors. My first opinion about the MCC office is that its in a very dismal condition. The whole building first needs to be cleaned up.

The floors, stairs & offices are so dirty. once can clearly see beetle nut litter, Beedi & cigarette butts everywhere. Dust and dirt is all over the building. The toilets are stinking (one need not go in to go to check this out !) God knows how the staff, officers & big bosses work in such an dirty environment!!! The worst is the medical section where the poor Malaria & other patients are treated. The department itself looks very unhygenic & wears a pathetic look.

I do not wish to mention anything of the offices as its not worth it. Just imagine - If this is the state our corporation office who are supposed to keep our city clean, how can we expect ever expect it to be clean. We can boldly change the name from "MAHA NAGARA PALIKE", to 'MAHA NARAKA PALIKE". My honest suggestion to the Mayor or whoever is concerned to send the MCC officals once sent to Dubai or Abu Dhabi to learn something useful rather than send them to Hyderabad, Cochin or Chennai. I am confident that the expenses will go into a waste.

The officials can definitely learn a lot of things form this place. I hope our Mayor is listening ? There is another wonderful office in Mangalore - no prize for guessing this, Yes - its our Taluk office... You can experience when you go next for your land or flat registrations. If there is an award for worst offices in the country they will be bagged by these two offices for sure.

Ammusing news,if you visit Mangalore city corporation you will find better and greater ammusing things which happen in our city corporaion office. From the entrance till the top Floor offices( all Departments) you find most of the people who hang around are either chamchas or middle men of the head of the departments and they are only bothered about the way how to make money, its like an open mouth of crocodile which tries to gulp whatever comes to its mouth, and this tour is nothing for them, they enjoy many more tours without anybodys knowledge.

The health officers are the worst examples who are supposed to issue license for any trade would demand bribe if they find the trade is of a different kind, for example bar & restaurant, wine stores etc.

It was a shocking news for me, when i enquired my dear wife (corporator)about the tour and she replied affirmative. few chosen one have gone to the sponsored (inducement for ulterior motive) tour, to study the KUDCEMP projects. dear touring corporators kindly watch the cochin and chennai roads and gift us the same. M.C.C. doesnt pay to the contractors in time, hence the contractors back track from the tender process, ultimately common man suffers.

"Make hay when the sun shines". The Corporators are using the sunshine to enjoy at citizens' cost. I remember, few years back Mr. Lobo who was the M.C.C.Commissioner led a team of Corporators/Officials to Margao, Goa to see the fish market there so that similar market could come up in Mangalore. What a foolish idea it was! The old fish market was demolished immediately thereafter and till today nothing has been done.

Staff of municipality means all expenses to be looked after by tax payers. Their full income must go to bank and then to F.D.
