Moodbidri, Oct 22:
A rare bird usually found in south east Asian countries was located at a farm here on Monday October 20. The rare crested hawk-eagle known as ‘Jatayu Pakshi’ in Kannada and colloquially as ‘Juttina Pakki’ was found on the fence of the farm owned by Sampat, at Aliyoor, in Shirtady, near here..

The rare crested hawk-eagle is a carnivore which preys on rabbits and reptiles. It has a lifespan of about 10 years and is a loner. The local ornithologist said this bird is about three months old, and weighs nearly 2.5 kgs. The bird has been handed over to Pilikula Nisargadhama, on the outskirts of Mangalore.

Thanks to Shekar Ajekar for the information. Today the identity of birds, animals and plants has become a difficult proposition unless there are at least a few budding taxonomists in this field. The flora and fauna is getting depleted, endangered and soon will become extinct and so also would be the basic sciences of identifying plants and animals ( Taxonomy).

Business people would like to look for plants and animals which can fill one's coppers. Who else is bothered about preserving plants and animals/birds in their natural habitat? But I have a hope that if you and I can become a little less selfish then there is chance for Jatayu pakshi(s) to survive and multiply!

It is ideal to release the bird in its natural habitat after its necessary treatment. We can use only pictures and movies for educational purposes at Pillikula since we have facilities for very good photography nowadays. If we dont act now the word RARE has to be repleced with EXTINCT in the news articles.

Shiva is right. This bird is certainly not any "eagle". From the looks of it it likely to be a Malay Tiger Bittern. It is a rare winter visitor to southern sea board. I hope learned authorities at Pilikula are not treating it as an eagle. It is essentially a fish eater.hope it is till alive, but chances of it surviving is doubtful.
