Mangalore: Private Buses to Pave Way for Government Ones

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore / Bangalore, Nov 3: Transport minister R Ashok announced here on Sunday November 2, that the city bus services, presently being operated by the private bus owners, will be replaced with government buses shortly.

Saying that the department officials have already drafted necessary action plan to start bus services in Mangalore, he said that necessary instructions have already been issued to the district administration on the issue.

Asserting that Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation(KSRTC) is fully equipped to handle tranport in the state, he said that the government is planning to ban movement of private buses on national highways in the state. He was speaking after initiating the experimental run of the newly introduced  air-conditioned 'Marco Polo' buses here.

At present, private buses are allowed to operate on the state and national highways, on the ground that KSRTC does not have the requisite capacity to cater to the demands of the passengers. This has been depleting the revenues of the KSRTC, Ashok said. In a dispute on the issue of rerstricting the movement of private bus that is pending in the state High Court, the government has decided to furnish a certificate to the court, saying that the KSRTC has the capacity to provide enough services to the passengers of the state, the minister explained.

A most serious crime is being orchestrated by the govt to nationalise the bus services. A public service that is running so efficiently and smoothly without any complains from the people is being stopped. ON WHAT BASIS! The govt babus are not doing what they should do instead disrupt what exists.

Instead of providing more BUS SHELTERS, MORE TRAFFIC POLICE PATROLS, SAFER ROADS, A STRONGER INTERACTION WITH THE OWNERS UNION AND THERBY BETTER MANAGEMENT OF THE PRIVATE BUS. These are the simple things we want the govt to do. If they really want to nationalize the bus service start by running busses in the interior remote areas and get the peoples confidence and then move to the cities.

The private bus service, especially the Express service, has been like the one operated by Hells Angels. Their Drivers and bosses have been treating human life worse than that of animal [life]. So,if the Government buses can provide quality service, then shall we say, ‘Good riddance of bad rubbish’ ?

If KSRTC and Private buses co-exist, commuters have good options to the best service between the two. Gradually KSRTTC will lend competition to private buses by becoming hygienic conscious, punctuality will improve. At the same time private buses will also lend competition to KSRTC by becoming polite to the passengers, cut downing hurricane speed and accidents and gradually forcing them to reduce the bus fair to certain extent too.

Therefore if they co-exist private buses employment problem will be also solved. Finally due to co-existence monopoly will be weakened of both

Very Good News for the commuters where safety is more important than reaching the destination espcially for innocent children, ladies, elderly people who are the usual victims. But, the govt buses should be punctual, cost effective and should not waste commuters time in issuing tickets, checking etc.

We had Indian Railways used by millions of commuters daily and we were very happy because people with some conscience paid the fair and others traveled freely. The Railway budget was hated by all because the RM increased the fair every year - including George Fernandes who used to organise strikes every year until he became railway minister.

I used to travel by KSRTC buses regularly and I had to pay the full fair but there was no ticket issued. When I demanded a ticket 50% of the fair was refunded to me and I had to refuse. This was happening on every bus unless the ticket was issued at the starting point.

I suggest the transport minister is given a crash course by Lalu Prasad Yadav how to run public transport not only without loss (for which we pay taxes) but also make profit out of it. If you can not do that, let the private sector handle it like the airports etc. As for accidents let the non-corrupt police handle them.

It is indeed a welcome move by the transport minister provided he doesnt succumb to the pvt bus lobby. The pvt buses appear like the vehicles of death. they scare the lady drivers specially on two wheelers.

Every day once we reach home safely we thank our and our children's stars. The drivers get some vicarious pleasure in harassing the others. Private buses should be banned totally for the good of the public.

Private buses and KSRTC must co-exist. They will have to compete between them on hygiene, punctuality, speed, ticket fare etc., and end uses will get the most of benefit out of it. It is not feasible to operate either of the one party on sole basis - monopoly. There is common saying “absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

The goverment single handedly manageing the road transport is bad for all in the long run. Without the competetion of the private transport system the govt transport would never have reached to this standard.

I think the private transport must unite as a union and form a UNITED TRANSPORT CO. and fight the govt bureaucracy tooth and nail. All the govt enterprises are robbing the tax payers and thereby surviving. Why doesnt the govt go and operate busses in remote areas where private busses wont. At the same time the private busses should respect the laws and as a punishment if they commit a speeding violation or rash driving then their licence should be revoked and given to the next person in the waiting list.

Good intention shown by transport minister. His statement as well as his intention seems to be good only on papers. Private buses have become the part and parcel of people of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Agreed that over the years they have troubled us too with their domineering qualities, frequent rise in ticket fare, strikes etc. But given a chance to choose between KSRTC and private buses, I would still go for private buses simply owing to their punctuality, cleanliness (compared to KSRTC) and service. Right now we enjoy the luxury of having buses at least every two-minute to most of the routes.

Can we expect this from KSRTC? They can't. They are not able to run buses every 2-minute to most of the routes. Add to this their time sense. They are never on time. I have had the opportunity of living in Raichur, Belgaum (Chikkodi), Bijapur, Bangalore etc owing to my education and profession in the past. In all these areas KSRTC is the boss. They are the worst operators. While I was in Raichur and Belgaum, it was surprise if the bus ever came on time. They are never reliable. You want to know their speed? They are not far behind. And when it comes to cleanliness, they do not know what it is meant by keeping things clean.

Their Rajahamsa, Volvo services are good but not even BMTC. Have you ever seen a BMTC buses coming on time and leaving on time from Majestic in Bangalore? In Dakshina Kannada and Udupi you can blame private operators for accidents? Does that mean in other districts where KSRTC is solely operating, there are no accidents? Private buses, though they are at time reckless, maintain time, give a good service and are clean.

The twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have one of the best transport systems perhaps. (I say because, I have been to other states and experienced their transport system too). Instead of removing all private buses from Mangalore roads, let ministr think of introducing KSRTC in phases. Can he replace about 1000 odd city buses with equal number of KSRTC buses? Let's not go by minister's words. We are living here and we know and understand our needs better. Let government introduce laws and regulations to control private buses instead of the idea of introducing KSRTC. The only area KSRTC scores over private buses as per my knowledge is ticket fare. KT is much cheaper. But with kind of good service provided by private buses, one would mind spending a few extra bucks to travel and reach destination on time. Private buses score over KSRTC in quality and maynot be in quantity. So I regard that quality is better than quantity perhaps!!!!

After all don’t you know that is KSRTC service and to whom blame at the end when things are not set right immediately ? People will grumble when KSRTC will crumble under pressure. Much useful for elder people & also for school childrens. what ever the problem come, government should go ahead with it. No point in looking back when most of people need it. But there should be perfect timings & enough buses to cater with. Buses with automatic doors best suited to counter the youths who always enjoy footpboard creating troubles for everyone. Also it's better to have government service as some of the guys always perfer ladies area, even some conductors making ladies travel quite difficult.

Kudos to the Transport Minister, if he is able to break the DK/Udupi Pvt. transport Operators mafia who treat their fare paying passengers with contempt. Today's fatal Manjunath bus-car accident is another eye-opener. I have studied these problems for many years & can conclusively that both HMV owners & its ill-groomed drivers are solely responsible for fatal accidents & these HMV's expect all others on the road to give way for them, b'coz they have the most shreeky horns fitted in their HMV's, allowed by our most corrupt RTA head by successive DC's. The pvt bus/truck operators lobby is so strong that I fear that they may be able to buy this Transport Minister too & stall this proposal, just the way M'lore RTO doesnot pass the KSRTC's AC sleeper buses in PASSING TEST [which I know from reliable source inside KSRTC], which may cut into the business of pvt bus mafia.

Hope high court stays this. KSRTC has no idea how to run city buses. People who support this idea, please have a look at the public transport system of Mysore, undoubtedly, the worst one in the South India. Here we waste at least 1 hour per day waiting for city buses (Govt Operated). We request for an increase in frequency, but no one is there to respond.

Buses are dirty, conductors are rude, they never arrive on time, I don’t think they even have a time table. . Private buses take around 10 mins or less from Bharat Mall to Hampankatta but here in Mysore buses take half an hour(that too if you are lucky) to travel the same distance . They take a break after every stop to issue tickets. Travel in Mysore once, and I am sure, you will be proud of the private bus system in Mangalore.

I request KSRTC to start AC bus services between the Taluka HQ's of DK/Udupi & esp. bet'n M'lore/Udupi, as the dust pollution one encounters while travelling bet'n M'lore/Udupi is so high that one needs a full bath on reaching either destination I still remember that the dust settled on my head after travelling thru' Surathkal from Udupi to M'lore did not go by a plain water wash of my head and I had to take a full shampoo/soap bath to clean my head/hair. How much dust/smoke might have gone inside the lungs is unimaginable.

I feel that there are enough no. of passengers between M'lore & Udupi who can afford to travel in AC buses. Hope KSRTC introduce some good behaviour training classes to its staff. Yesterday, I saw interview of transport Minister in Kannada TV channel and it seemed that he has good intentions. All the best to Minister for Transport R. Ashok. This will be a good development if political parties do not play dirty games to stop it's implementation. At the moment private buses can be seen waiting in some bus stops for another bus of their route number to approach the stop. Once it does, they drive at breakneck speed in competition even skipping some bus stops on the way.

Some buses do not let old people in fearing that they will take more time at stops. Some other buses can be seen avoiding school children at stops as they carry passes. Most conductors only take cash but do not issue tickets. Two wheeler riders have a terrible time due to speeding buses.

They have to avoid unending potholes on the one hand and save their lives from the speeding buses on the other. The situation is worse in the nights. I have never seen any policeman taking any action against private buses in my life.

Mr Deepak, Mlore-Blore and to many who think -ve of KSRTC. Accidents are not comitted by Buses'. It is due to inexperienced and rash/drunk etc drivers who do not pay attention on roads and due to poor maintainnance of buses. It can happen to private or Govt Buses. Poor Bus's are not supposed to be blamed her and its 100% human error sometimes directly(driving) or indirectly(maintainance). And its not that its Heavy Vehicle's fault and the Victim is innocent also. Drivers of heavy Vehicles are always blamed whenevr a accident happens without judjing the situation as the light vehicle's drivers are the victims here. Of course drivers of heavy vehicles should be little more carefull which unfortunately is not happening mainly in the private section(NH-17). I used to frequent travel between Mlore- Blore for more than 10 years . Of all the private bus's i found No Bus service provide service like KSRTC. On my personnel experience, I always did and do feel safe travelling in KSRTC than any private carrier. Till date i never faced any delay unless unfortunately if some breakdown. Come on we human beings break down once in a while, after all these are machines made by us.

So spare them. At least they have spare busses in the nearest Depo on evry route whihc they will engage immidietly to action if any serious breakdown. This facility is not possible and provided by any private carriers, Karnataka KSRTC is always known for providing good service. Just have a look at Kerala KSRTC busses in Mlore or go to Chennai to see their state transposrt busses, ours is 100 times better than them.

We can expect something good from BJP government \\i hope. Let us make this happen soon as Private buses have become a head ache for the commuters, \please put a brake on thier horns & on their speed. See we have best example today of reckless driving which killed 5 people this morning. Government service if maintained good is better than private buses.

But please ply good buses with trained drivers. Please maintain the timing.....I hope this would work because govt buses will not be competing with each other and will not be on strike often.only thing is puncuality.

The people who travelled in KSRTC busses knows the truth. No start time, no end time and no one can comment over them b'coz they are Govt. I used to travel from Mangalore to Sullia for 4 yrs. Also from Mangalore to Udupi for 4 yrs. I enjoyed my M'lore - Udupi trip more than Sullia - M'lore. Who told accidents wont happen with KSRTC busses ?

A sensible and safe move. Lesser people will be murdered by the greedy speeding private buses on the roads like what we read about gory death of 3 innocent occupants of an Indica car on 03 Oct 08.

first the goverment incerases the permits and allows more private buses, which has lead to competition. then along with the hike in fuel prices the road tax also increases. and in his while if the fares of the bus increase people have a problem with it. we INDIANS are only fit to sit and watch a cat and dog fight. shame on us that inspite of knowing the trouble we are not supportive.. from tomorrow stop private autos also. ask the government to do that too.

It is a very Good move.when ever we Travel by these so called Private Busses(Killer Busses one Gentleman rightly said) we do not know whether we reach to our destination or no.And our RTO's are Not doing their Job well. Powerful Horns where passengers are suffering from various diseases because of this, and over speeding and over taking even though they see a vehicle is in a opposite lane, specially a Loaded Tankers,Trailers or Trucks and for cars and Bikes no respect what so ever, they make all these people life miserable and end up with head on Collusion killing people by these accidents.

We can avoid all this, and many lifes will be saved If KSRTC is prompt in their service and they extend the services from Mangalore to Kundapur atleast.Good job and we are Looking forward to see KSRTC Marco Polo A/C Busses on the road for cofortable travel of People who go to office up and down form udupi - Mangalore, and in all places of karnataka with effcetive price of the tickets to a common man level.Private Bus charges are sky high and monopolised at the moment.

if the govrnment had to step to implementing their buses, then in the first place y did it allow the private owners to start. all these years they ate so much of taxes and now they want the permit also. shame on the govt officials and you people who support them. if accidents take place its not because anyone wants to do so. u mean all government buses are safe??

makes no sense.. i pity the private bus runners, because the government is stealing away their daily bread.. will the govt be able to pay any sort of remuneration to them, so that the private owners can recover the money?? this is sheer cruelty. what if the government takes over your land and say they'll build a government hospital. it's for a good cause? . give it without hesitation. will u?

Fantastic move by the state government & much awaited decision by many Mangaloreans. Hope government transport will provide good services to the coastal people, issue passes to the school children who are paying heavy amount even if it's half ticket, also some poor children can't ride thro' private buses due to financial problems. Best decision, implement it soon.

The Government move should be welcomed by all as it will benefit everyone from school children to elder people. Both KSRTC & BMTC are much competent enough to cater the state transportation, also have Hi-Fi services. Mangalore should be made as that of Bangalore in terms of Transportation, a fantastic govt owned trasport (BMTC)in Bangalore, which is having state of the art buses. Private lobby should be stopped sooner or later.

Good move by Transport Minister. Should be implemented soon, govt. should apply brakes to Private operators which have been rash in NH-17 killing many people. Actually Private Bus owners lobby controlled the earlier Congress Govt. as many of the MLA's belong to that party who have many bus services including that to Bangalore also that lobby delayed the train services to Bangalore.

    Good news....some suggestions plzzz..

1)Mangalore has narrow roads,so mini buses may reduce the traffic jams.

2)Governers should be fitted to all the city busses.

3)Majority of the bus stands in mangalore are at the junctions or at the turnings.these bus stands should be shifted away from the junctions/turnings.

    4) NO whistles should be allowed to the conductors or the checkers.Only electrical bells be used.

5)All the busses should have automatic doors

A good thought. Especially during the peak hour's the private busses run full and you can find people hanging outside the doors. Specially in route No's 1,2 13,17,19, 47,19,45 and many more. Its very dangerous, that too in rainy season and its impossible for ladies and children to get inside the bus's during that time. KSRTC should put lots of busses in these sectors atleast during the peak hours in morning and evening. A good revenue to the state and good facility to the passengers. I hope Private bus owners do not come up with any kind of protest by lobbying through their assosiation.
