Mangaluru, Nov 8: Professsor, dean of commerce and chairman, Prof Ishwara P, took over as in-charge vice chancellor (VC) of Mangalore University here on Wednesday November 7. Dr Kishore Kumar C K, who was the in-charge vice chancellor, handed over power to him.

After the term of office of the erstwhile vice chancellor of the university, Prof K Bhyrappa, ended on June 5, Dr Kishore Kumar C K had been appointed as in-charge, based on the position of senior dean. As his term of senior dean ended now, Prof Ishwar P took over charge.

University registrar, Prof M Khan, registrar (examinations), Prof Raveendra Acharya, special officer, Dr Nagappa Gowda and others were present.

Alumni Association demand

Addressing a press meet on Wednesday on the issue, president of Mangala Alumni Association, Dinesh Kumar Alva, noted that even after 38 years of its existence, Mangalore University has not had its own past student as its chancellor. He said that always professors from Mysuru with University of Mysore background are becoming vice chancellors of the university, which gives rise to the notion that Mysore University still has grip over Mangalore University. He demanded an eligible past student of this university to be made the vice chancellor.

He said that it would be apt to appoint people who have better knowledge about this university, in order to provide transparent administration. He said that over eight persons who had studied here, who have applied for the post, are eligible to become its vice chancellors and demanded that one of them be chosen as vice chancellor.

Association's general secretary, Dr Ganesh Sanjeev, organizing secretary, Chandrahas K, spokespersons, Venu Sharma and Madhusudan Bhat were present.
