Udupi: Keradi Kambala celebration concludes

Udupi, Dec 3: Beedina Mane Kambala was conducted in the Kambala paddy field with grand celebration because of the efforts of Keradi Beedina Mane and cooperation of the villagers of Keradi.

Beedina Mane Kambala has got hundreds of years of history. This year also the Kambala was celebrated in a grand and traditional manner. Buffaloes from various parts of the taluk had come to partake in this traditional sport. The buffaloes, owners of the buffaloes and the members of their team were welcomed in traditional style with trumpet and offering betel leaves.



In the Kambala celebration there were competitions for buffaloes in the 'Halage Vibaga' and 'Hagga Vibaga'. For the local youth there was race in Kesaru Gadde and tug of war.

This time the star attraction of the Kambala was the presence of Sandalwood actor and director Rishab Shetty and Pragati Rishab Shetty. Speaking on the occasion with the media, Rishab Shetty said, "Kambala is the only traditional and entertaining sport that is conducted for the farmers. I have come here to attend Beedina Kambala after long gap of 20 years. There are for and against views about Kambala. I wish that this sport should continue in the future also."

Ashwath, one of the family members of Beedina Mane said, "Beedina Mane Kambala has hundreds of years of history. This is continuing due to the Beedina Mane and the people of Keradi."

More than 30 buffaloes took part in the competition. Cash prize and permanent trophies were given to the winning buffaloes and their owners. Cash prizes and trophies were awarded to local youths who won the Kesaru Gadde competitions organized for them.
