Mangaluru, Dec 6: The department of English organised an exhibition on the ‘Life and Works of R.K Narayan’ to commemorate his 112th birth anniversary, on December 5 at St Agnes College (Autonomous).
Principal Dr Sr Jeswina inaugurated the exhibition and Shruthi Bandary, a former assistant professor of the English department, was the guest of honour, she unveiled the portrait of R K Narayan which was selected as the best entry in the pre-exhibition art contest conducted by the Lit-wit club of the department.
Shruthi Bandary in her address spoke about the literary talent of R K Narayan especially with reference to the simple stories for children that had a depth of traditional, religious and human values embedded in them. Dr Sr Jeswina congratulated the department of English and the students for their efforts in organising an exhibition of this stature.
The English major students of III BA had recreated the Malgudi village and some of them dressed up as the characters of R K Narayan’s stories. The English major students of II BA had prepared models to depict different stories by R K Narayan and they also narrated the stories. The highlight of the exhibition was the screening of ‘Malgudi Days’ which had a lot of enthusiastic viewers.
The St Agnes CBSE students were invited to view the exhibition and many of the degree students came whenever they were free. To sum up it was an eventful day for the staff and students of the department of English.
