Mangaluru, Dec 8: 'Shariat Preservation' rally and convention are being organised in the city on Sunday December 9 by Samastha Shariat Preservation Committee. These programmes are backed by the slogan, 'join hands for the protection of constitutional rights'. The convention will take place at the Nehru Maidan here.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday December 7, convener of the convention reception committee, K Abdul Aziz Darimi, noted that the constitution of the largest democratic and secular country in the world has vested with its citizens the right to live as per their choice regarding religious matters. He said that in the recent past, it has been observed that the constitutional rights are encroached upon and certain people and organizations interfere with religious issues. He observed that this is a development that has the potential of harming the democratic fabric of the nation.

Darimi said that a rally will be taken to the venue of the convention at 2.30 pm on December 9 from Jyothi Junction here. The convention will begin at 3.45 pm, he added.

Dakshina Kannada district Madrassa Management has called for observing December 9 as prayer day for the departed Ulemas and Umaras. To enable teaching staff and senior students of Madrassas to participate in the convention, the Madrassas have been given holiday for evening classes, said president of the management, I Moidinabba Haji.
