Mangaluru, Dec 8: School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya organised a workshop on ‘Crime Scene Investigation’ on December 6.

The resource person for the session was B C Ravindra, a retired deputy director of regional Forensics Science Laboratory. He is a well-known ballistics expert and the only crime scene expert in Karnataka who has visited around 7000 crime scenes.

Nashma Khatija of II BA welcomed the chief guest and the HOD of Criminology department, Sarik Ankitha florally welcomed him. Apart from the students of Roshni Nilaya, students of St Agnes College, here were present at the event.

Ravindra took over the event by explaining the objectives of Crime Scene Management, Crime Scene Reconstruction and a holistic approach to a crime scene. He spoke about the Locard’s Principle of Exchange which is very helpful in the reconstruction of any crime scene. He enlightened the students showing complex examples of crime scenes and how systematic investigation can help uncover different dimensions of the crime scene and lead us to the actual picture of what occured. He also shared his personal experience regarding all the cases displayed such as homicide, death by hanging, gunshots, sexual assault, drowning, arson and others, thereby making the session very interesting for the listeners.

He showed a case of a fatal road accident that occured on the road from Tannirbhavi to Panambur, Mangaluru of a final year MBBS student case. The puzzle was that it was mistaken for murder and he through an animated demonstration reconstructed it and proved it was in fact, a road accident. He briefed the students on wildlife forensic and some of the cases in it.

He concluded the session by giving a practical demonstration on cases of hanging, on how to distinguish between accidental hanging and suicidal hanging.
