Bengaluru: Both coalition partners eye council chairman's post

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 8: On Friday December 7, the state governor passed an order, fixing December 12 as the date for holding election to the post of the chairman of the legislative council.

Bagging this post has become an issue of prestige between the JD(S) and Congress parties. How this tussle will end has kicked up lot of interest.

Leaders of both the parties will hold consultation on December 10 or 11 to finalise the candidate. As BJP has only 18 members in the 75-member council, that party is not interested in fielding a candidate, it is gathered.

As per protocol, the post of the council chairman is next to the governor who is at the helm. Congress with 38 members in the council, has rightfully demanded this post but JD(S) has claimed right on this seat, pointing out that the post of assembly speaker has been given to K R Ramesh Kumar of Congress. JD(S) is thinking of continuing Basavaraj Horatti, the pro tem chairman, in the same post through unanimous election.
