Mangalore: RTA Proposes to Make Bus Voice System Mandatory in District

Mangalore, Jan 21: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner(DC) and president of the District Road Safety Committee V Ponnuraj informed, that the Regional Transport Authority has been considering a proposal to make it mandatory for all the buses plying in the district to have Bus Voice system. Detailed discussions on the proposal will be held in the next meeting of the Authority, he informed.

He was speaking after presiding over the 20th National Road Safety Week inaugural function organized under the joint aegis of the district administration, transport department and the police department on Tuesday January 20 in the city.

"The above system also involves setting up of control rooms in the offices of the district police and the transport office to keep a watch on the movement of the buses. Once this system is fully implemented, we hope to achieve a marked improvement in the road safety," he explained and sought the cooperation of the bus owners in making the scheme a success. The DC also came up with a suggestion to create awareness among the school children and also other citizens about the need to follow road safety rules.

Corporation Bank executive director Asit Paul who inaugurated the programme, stressed on the need to implement a programme to create widespread awareness about the road rules.  Additional superintendent of police R Dileep too spoke on the occasion.

In their addresses, special invitee Rajavarma Ballal, who is the president of the State Bus Owners Union and regional transport officer Afzal Ahmed Khan laid emphasis on the need to make the roads in the district safer by following laid down rules.

Transport officer Mugalavalli Keshava Dharani in his introductory address, pointed out that India, which ranks 12th in the world as far as the number of vehicles is concerned, stands first in the number of accidents.
