Bantwal: Foundation Stone Laid for Vented Dam at Thumbay

Bantwal, Feb 17: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar laid the foundation stone for the long-awaited new vented dam, which is being built at a cost of Rs 48.21 crore at Thumbay near here, on Monday February 16. With this, the citizens of the city hope, that the routine water shortage they suffer from during the summer months, will soon be a thing of the past.

Addressing those present at the function, the minister said, that the state government will be meeting the cost of the entire project." The dam will be ready within two years. The company, which has undertaken contract of the dam works, has been asked to maintain high quality. Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers too have come forward to extend support through technological know-how," he added. He also stated that the state government led by BJP has undertaken various development-oriented projects in Dakshina Kannada district, some of which have already been completed while some others are in progress.

Coastal Development Authority chairman B Nagaraj Shetty, MLAs N Yogish Bhat, U T Khader, DK zilla panchayat president K P Sucharita Shetty and Thumbay gram panchayat president Abubakker participated as chief guests.

Mangalore City Corporation mayor Ganesh Hosabettu presided. Deputy mayor Shakeela Kawa, whip K Shankar Bhat, standing committee chairmen Rajani Dugganna, Navinchandra, Premanand Shetty, commissioner Samir Shukla and several others were present.

Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board executive engineer Chamaraje Gowda, giving details about the dam said that the water supply capacity will increase to 36 mgds in place of the present 18 mgds once the dam is completed. Bhaskar Rai Kukkuvalli welcomed and presented the programme.

The new dam will be 350 metres long and seven metres high. It will have 30 sluice gates of 10 metres width each, which can be electrically operated. M/s Ritwik Projects Ltd and M/s Swapna Constructions have undertaken the contract. The dam has been designed, keeping in mind the projected population of the city by 2026, that is, 8.83 lac.

Once the dam is completed, it is proposed to supply water to Ullal, Tumbe, Munnur, Bajal, Adyar, Pudu, Mulky etc., from here, in addition to the city.

    Good mangalore, Hope the project will be completed in time. Also happy to see BJP has taken U T Khader also into account. I dont agree that in 2026 mangalore will havee 8.8 Lac people. Current population is 6 lacs with current growth by 2010 mangalore will cross 10Lac population.
