Mangalore, Feb 19: The first national-level nurses’ conference was inaugurated at Shanthi Kiran, Bajjodi, on Thursday February 19.

The conference with the theme ‘Paradigm Shift in Nursing Education - Education of the Heart with Highlights on Action Research’ has been organized by St Ann’s College of Nursing.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the event, Dr Ramananda Shetty, vice-chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, said that paradigm shift in nursing education is necessary in the current era of advanced science and technology. The teaching methods must change with time, he said.

“Paradigm shift in education will enhance student’s wisdom as well as those of teachers. Educators can keep themselves abreast of time using technologies. Ultimately, students will benefit from the expertise of their tutors”, he opined.

He claimed that teachers have to be trained first. Committed faculty members are needed to bring change in nursing education, opined Dr Shetty.

Prof. Selva Titus Chacko, Christian Medical College, Vellore, said that teachers must be impact builders. “Values must be possessed to live a value-based life. Our personal values develop professional values”, she added.

Delegates from five states are participating in the conference. Eric C Lobo, chairman, Lobo Teacher’s Foundation, presided over the function. Principal Lucy Rodrigues was present.
