Mangalore: 2,382 Short-listed for Jobs at the Mela

MANGALORE, Feb 22: The two-day “Skill development and employment mela” concluded on Saturday with offers for final interviews or appointments issued to 432 people.

Presiding over the valedictory function of the mela Minister for Labour B.N. Bachche Gowda said that of the 15,000 people who attended the programme 2,382 had been short-listed for various jobs and 6,000 had been chosen for skill development training. Ramesh Jhalki, Commissioner of Employment and Training, told The Hindu that the training for those selected during the mela would be conducted at the district headquarters, and if necessary, in other centres also. The training would cover soft skills also, he added.

Various industrial training institutes (it is), and private and government institutes had been identified for providing the training. Once they were employable, their details would be sent to different companies for possible employment, he said.

Mr. Bachche Gowda said that he was happy about a large number of women participating in the mela and added that Rs. 100 crore had been allocated in the budget for the Department of Employment and Training.

Stating that job melas were being organised all over the State, he said the Government was aiming at providing jobs for 10 lakh people through this programme. The five melas organised earlier had attracted 25,000 participants, he said.

There was a need to set up more institutes to impart training and develop skillshe said and acknowledged the contribution of 102 companies, which took part in the Mangalore job mela.

The Minister handed over letters to 31 people, symbolically, certifying their participation in the mela. District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar, and MLAs Yogish Bhat and U.T. Khader were present.
