Udupi, Feb 23: Speaking after inaugurating the newly built solid waste processing unit set up at Karvalu in Alevoor near here, home minister Dr V S Acharya said that the city will be able to get rid of the Beedinagudde garbage dump, once the unit becomes functinal. "The garbage in Beedinagudde will be used as landfill. Once this garbage is removed, the municipality will get about five acres of land for own use. It has to draft plans to put this land to optimum use," he added.

He also asked the concerned to ensure that the newly inaugurated unit functions scientifically and all required machinery along with the full employee strength required to run it efficiently, is provided to it. "The state government has decided to sanction a special grant of Rs 15 crore to the local municipality for this year. If the municipal council submits proposals in tune with requirements and norms, the initial installment of Rs 7.5 crore will be released immediately," he informed.  He also said that the government wants the people of the state to live happily without any problems and that it has been doing everything within its command to make this happen.

MLA Raghupati Bhat said that the Karvalu processing could become a reality because of the guidance provided and efforts put in by the previous deputy commissioner of the district Ponnuraj. He wished, that the unit would commence operations immediately and that the town will get rid of the Beedinagudde dump at the earliest. He suggested to the municipality to consider handing over the unit to voluntary service organizations for managing and also to start an earthworm manure plant at the site.

Municipal president Dinkar Shetty presided. Town Urban Development Authority chairman Sudhakar Shetty, city development cell director Gopkuldas Nayak, standing committee chairman Pandurang Malpe and others were present.
