Sullia: Wearing of Burkha Banned in Rural College

Sudipto Mondal - The Hindu

PANJA VILLAGE/SULLIA TALUK, Mar 3: Muslim girls of the Government Composite Pre-University College here have been banned from wearing the burkha by local Hindutva outfits and the Bharatiya Janata Party-affiliated Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

According to Lakshmisha Gobbalathadka, the self-proclaimed architect of the ban, the idea was first proposed to the college authorities at his behest by a few students affiliated to the ABVP in early January this year.

First step

“Four of my boys spoke to the college principal and demanded that Muslim girls should be banned from wearing burkhas in classrooms,” said Gobbalathadka, who is also the district convener of a fringe outfit called Hindu Jagarana Vedike.

Avoiding trouble

“We agreed immediately. We did not want any trouble,” said a college official. But soon the demands began to grow.

Emboldened by the support the boys of his group received from a section of students, they went on to extend the burkha ban across the entire 28-acre campus.

Formalised

Once the ban was formalised by the college authorities, groups of boys took it upon themselves to impose it. “Every day, the boys sit at the tea stall near the college gate. If we take even one step into the college gate with the burkha on, they start scolding us,” said a 16-year-old class 10 student.

Violence on campus

Meanwhile, another controversy broke out on the campus after the ABVP alleged that a Muslim boy had made a proposal of marriage to a Hindu girl.

Beaten up

“Our boys beat up the Muslim boy on February 28,” claimed Mr. Gobbalathadka.

At the college’s development committee meeting on January 29, a large group of students, led by Mr. Gobbalathadka, barged in demanding that Muslim girls should stop wearing the burkha even on their way to and from the college.

The demand created a furore dividing committee members, according to college principal, Balasubramaniam. Soon, hundr eds of activists entered the venue and physically attacked Muslim committee members and Hindus who opposed their demands. Following the incident, Mr. Gobbalathadka and his followers were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Growing support

“Many others have been inspired by the success we have had here. Soon, this campaign will spread to all government colleges in the region,” Mr. Gobbalathadka told The Hindu.

He added that the garment would soon be banned from public spaces in the entire village of Panja.

‘How can they?’

Said Panja gram panchayat president Rafique, who sustained injuries during the January 29 violence, said: “Some may feel that the burkha is a symbol of oppression of women. Even if that is true, a resistance to the garment should come from within the community. How can we tolerate somebody using force to ban the burkha?”

Reacting to the issue, Deputy Director of Public Instruction C. Chame Gowda told The Hindu, “The college authorities might have agreed to the ban under pressure. But there is no law that prevents the burkha. Everybody has the right to practice their religious beliefs as long as it does not inconvenience others.”

Concerned

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj expressed concern over the developments and said he was still inquiring into the issue. “The rule of law and the Constitution will prevail,” he said.

If they want Indian culture, Why not implementing Sarees/Salwars for students, why their girls students wear miniskirt. If there is uniform rule in the college, asking muslim girls not to wear burka in the campus or in the classroom may be reasonable. If anybody is opposing what they shall wear on the way to college or remove burka immediately entering the campus is not at all reasonable and shall not be allowed such things to happen. Religion in college is only one that is education !!! These goondas doesnt have any job and they want to become popular by imposing all these nonsense.

The whole issue could have been in control, had the college principal duely called the police and taken stringent action against them. Once he gave in under pressure..we see the end result now. I want to ask gobbalathadka, what would he do if someone asked his sister or wife to change from a saree/salwar to a mini skirt or jeans?

To wear or not to wear a bhurka should be left to the lady itself. No one should interfere in that. Nobody should insist or compell a lady to wear burkha and vice versa. Comon, it's her wish. Who are we to interfere?

Nagesh Nayak seems to be suffering from 'amnesia'. As mentioned by Ravi, for these illiterate goons, wearing western dress is wrong and at the same time wearing a cloth that covers oneself completely too is wrong. Then what should the people wear? These were the same goons who had made the headmistress of a particular school to apologise after she had objected asked a Christian boy, who was wearing 'Ayyappa' dress', not to wear black shawl round his neck. It was the father of the boy who had taken a pledge to go to Sabarimala and his son was wearing a shawl during school hours and he was a Christian. If they want the boys to be allowed to wear 'Ayyapa dress' (mostly a black shawl or lungi, then, why they object when Muslim girls wear burkha? And why the college administration has to bow before these goons? Nagesh Nayak for sure is not a BJP supporter. He is just derving pleasure by jeering at others. The way he responds to each and everything that is published, it is quite clear that he is not serious about what he writes, neither has he any knowledge. If the Muslim girls do not wear school uniforms and wear only burkha, then for sure, administration can object. But when they wear burkha over the school uniform, what's the problem? Does Gobbalathadka want high school girls and boys wear saree and lungi and come to the school? I think, it is the right time that people woke up from their slumber. Longer you take pleasure in deep slumber, worser will be the future. Fundamentalists, whether they are Christians, Hindus or Muslims, they are a curse not only to the religion but to the society itself. These weeds need to be nipped before they grow and spread all around.

This is pathetic, Can you imagine, if a lady wants to cover herself with a piece of cloth like Burkha to avoid any unnecessary stares from these kind of unliterate, uncultured, barbaric hooligans or goons or whatever we call them, for self protection, is it wrong on her part. It is his/her own wish to cover themselves in whatever dress they feel comfortable. Its not for these kind of puppets to teach what we want or we have to. Come on people don't get narrow minded in such kind of stupid things, there are much more and useful works to be done to secure our future. First of all it is very wrong on their part(university) for bowing down to pressure of these uneducated goons for they know nothing but to create troubles. This jobless creatures just want to be in news for getting attention and to rule the country. My peace loving country men lets pray that these mischeif mongers never succeed in thier untruthful goal, and pray to god to wipe out thier existence from the face of the earth. Ameen.

If its a woman's wish that no outsiders see her, so be it. Why are these goondas insist on seeing her ? Are they in the schools/colleges to concentrate on their studies or to monitor peoples'clothing ? Let the college impose uniform to all - they will know then. They too will have no chance to flaunt their imported shirts/pants !
