Mangalore: SAC Organizes Computer Science Symposium ‘Anveeksha-09’

Mangalore, Mar 23: The inaugural of ‘Anveeksha-09’, a symposium on futuristic technologies in computer science, presided over by Fr Francis Serrao, rector, St Aloysius College, was recently held.

G G Mohandas Prabhu, vice-president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mangalore, was the chief guest, and Girish Aithal, group manager, Infosys Technologies, Mangalore, was the guest of honour. 

Fr Denzil Lobo, director, AICS and AIBA, Prof Santhosh Rebello, dean of MCA, Rakesh Kumar, staff coordinator, Benson Miranda, president, Elixir, and Anish Kumar, student co-ordinator were present on the dais.

Rakesh Kumar delivered the welcome address and the dignitaries lit the lamp. Fr Lobo addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of knowledge and the role of Anveeksha in improving students’ knowledge of the IT field.

Prabhu also addressed the gathering emphasizing the need to think logically in problem-solving.

Prof Rebello felicitated Fr Serrao, who will soon take up his new role as provincial of Karnataka Jesuit Province. Namitha introduced the guest of honour and the inaugural function ended with Benson delivering the vote of thanks and the college anthem.

This was followed by the keynote address by Aithal on ‘The Challenges Faced in the IT Industry’.

He said that the challenges could be divided into three—business perspective, technological perspective, and non-business perspective. Aithal said that to overcome these challenges, we need to focus on quality and innovation.

He said that even recession had advantages for it was the perfect time to cut costs and improve on the skills of the staff.

Paper presentations were held at two venues simultaneously, ‘Algorithms’ at Venue 1 and Software Engineering at Venue 2. There were six papers presented in the first and five in the second category, respectively.

The afternoon session saw eight papers presented in ‘Advanced Applications’ and five papers in ‘Database’.

Prof Shanthi Thilagam delivered a talk on the topic ‘Data Mining: Applications’ while Prof Praveen Desai delivered an address on ‘Data Warehousing and Mining’.

The valedictory ceremony was held at 5 pm with Dr Ramachandra Rao, professor, McGill University, Montreal, also an alumnus of St Aloysius College, as the chief guest. He congratulated students for organizing such a programme where a lot of personal research was involved.

Fr Denzil Lobo, director, presided over the function and congratulated the students of AICS for organizing the symposium.  He added that research was very important for the growth of knowledge and wished that many more students would participate in such programmes.

Rakesh, the faculty coordinator gave a report on the day’s proceedings.
