Udupi: ‘Comparison of Atal and Manmohan Singh Achievements will form Poll Issue’

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Mar 25: Home minister Dr V S Acharya said that the achievements during the governance of Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government and Manmohan Singh-led UPA government at the centre, will be the issue on which the party would focus during the electioneering. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday March 24, he explained that nationalism, nationality, perverse policies being followed by the government on issues like communality would be the focal points of discussion at the BJP's election meetings.

When reporters drew his attention to the allegations leveled by the CPI that the BJP seeks votes based on religion alone and it does not have a specific economic policy, he said, perhaps the CPI is unaware of the fact that the Vajpayee government, after coming to power in 1998, had made giant strides in the fields like roads, power generation, grants for the development of primary health centres etc.

He alleged that during the term of the UPA government under Dr Singh, the development has become non-existent, there has been unabated price rice and cooking gas has become scarce.

Dubbing Sonia Gandhi, who holds the BJP as a communal party, a communal herself, he said that the BJP has since long, been advocating nationalism. The Congress party trifurcated the country to create two nations in 1947. Even now it has been joining hands with divisive forces. It has been according protection to Afzal Guru, who has been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court. It withdrew Prevention of Terrorism Act. In the north east states, the Congress party has given a call to the people, to vote for those who are pro-Christians. In different states, it has been following different kinds of divisive politics, without caring for the nation, he said.

To a question as to whether the coming election will reflect the popularity of the state government, he said this question is irrelevant as the election is being held for the Lok Sabha, not legislative assembly.

Party leader M Somashekhar Bhat was present.
