Mumbai: Rs. 11.96 Lakh worth Gutkha seized, 2 arrested

Palghar, Apr 30: Palghar police seized Gutkha worth over Rs 11 lac from two persons here in the early hours of Monday.

A driver and cleaner, both hailing from Panvel in the neighbouring Raigad district, were picked up after intercepting a tempo van on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway near Amboli village following a tip-off.

“Gutkha worth Rs 11.96 lac was transported by vehicle and the tempo driver and cleaner were charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Food Safety and Standards Act,” police spokesperson Hemant Katkar said.

The Maharashtra Government, in 2012 banned the sale and consumption of gutkha and pan masala and announced that the sale of the same would be considered as a non-bailable offence.
