Mangalore, Mar 31:
It is very significant that folk singing was created and enriched by those who have had no literacy and those who were deprived of it.  Since folklore contains genuine concern for the well-being of one and all, it can only caste positive influence on one's life, which is a welcome attribute, said Karnataka Janapada Academy former president Prof Kale Gowda Nagawara.

He was speaking at the inaugural of a symposium on ‘study of the nineteenth century folklore’ at Mangala Gangotri, here on Monday March 30.  The symposium was jointly organized by Mangalore University (MU) Kannada department and Karnataka Janapada Academy, Bangalore.

Folk singing has thrived in the remote areas among the people who live in consonance with the nature. Hence, there is a need to undertake special studies to understand its importance, he added.

Meanwhile, Gowda urged Mangalore University to undertake extensive study on the discontinuance of the tradition of matriarchal system of lineage that had been in vogue in the coastal district since long, which has since been replaced by the male-dominated families now.   Besides, history of folk singing and origins of folk adages that convey the harsh realities of life and people of that era in a lucid manner, should be unearthed, he emphasized.

Efforts should be made to preserve/revive various forms of folk art that are on the verge of extinction, said Karnataka Janapada Academy president Go Ru Chennabasappa.

The state administration has issued circulars to every college across the state, asking them to create awareness on folklore among the students, since it is truly integrated in daily living, Go Ru Chennabasappa added.

MU Kannada department professor Dr K Chinnappa Gowda was also present at the occasion.

MU Kannada department head Dr Sabiha Bhoomi Gowda welcomed the gathering.  MU Tulu department chief Dr Rajashree compered the programme.
