Kerala minister endorses burqa ban by Muslim Educational Society

Thiruvananthapuram, May 3 (IANS): The Muslim Educational Society (MES) in Kerala, which came out with a circular banning all face covering attires, on Friday got support from Kerala Minister of Higher Education K T Jaleel.

Jaleel told the media that it's time that Muslim religious organisations introspect if there is a need to follow rules and customs that are not prescribed by Islam.

"Even during the Haj and prayers, women don't cover faces, but some people are very particular that women should wear the burqa, which is not right," said Jaleel.

The Kozhikode headquartered MES that runs over 150 educational institutions in the state, banned all face covering attires at all its campuses from the academic year 2019-20.

However, this was opposed by the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, a popular Muslim religious organisation headed by Sayyid Muhammad Jifri Muthukkoya Thangal, who asked the MES not to interfere in issues related to faith and religion.

"The government has no intent to interfere in this issue and if needed, I will take the lead to initiate talks with religious heads to sort out the issue," said the three time legislator, who won as a CPI-M supported candidate and went on to become a Minister in the Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet in 2016.

In South India and Sri Lanka, most of the Muslim women wear loose clothes and coves the hair with headscarves.
The Muslim Educational Society, or MES as it is popularly known, has banned female students and faculty on its campuses from wearing the niqab, the face veil, starting June 1.

Not just the niqab, Kerala’s Muslim education body has also banned jeans, leggings, and miniskirts
The head of the Muslim Education Society says its 152 institutions have also restricted all forms of clothing ‘unacceptable to mainstream society’.

The ban imposed MES is on April 17, four days before the Sri Lanka attacks. It has surfaced in the public domain only on May 2.

Let me also point out that, young Catholic women in the US wrote an open letter the editor this week in The Observer asking for ban leggings. In her letter, she wrote "Leggings are so naked, so form-fitting, so exposing. Could you think of the mothers of sons the next time you go shopping and consider choosing jeans instead?" a Catholic mother wrote, said Maryann White in her letter.

She wrote further that "You couldn't help but see those blackly naked rear ends. I didn't want to see them - but they were unavoidable. How much more difficult for young guys to ignore them,".
In today's India from 2 to 80 years old get raped who are moderately dressed in Lehnga, Sari, Jeans and so leggings and so on.
There is no connection to the bombing in Srilanka and Kerala which BJP and its Bhakta's are praising and asking to implemented in India.
In fact, it was the only niqab banned. It was wrong to report 'Burqa'(Cloak) ban. Let's not forget most of the metro cities now face mask became part of daily life to avoid pollution which has come voluntarily can pose an equal threat.

Scarves and veils of different colors and shapes were customary in countless cultures long before Islam came into being in the seventh century in the Arabian Peninsula (which includes present-day Saudi Arabia). To this day, head coverings play a significant role in many religions, including Orthodox Judaism and Catholicism. Muslim religious writings are not entirely clear on the question of women veiling. Various statements in the and the (statements attributed to the prophet Mohammed) make reference to Mohammed’s wives veiling, but it is debatable whether these statements apply only to the Prophet’s wives or to all Muslim women. While the need for women to be modest is mentioned, the area women must cover depends on the source and ranges from “the bosom” to the whole body except the face and hands. The veil is a vehicle for distinguishing between women and men and a means of controlling male sexual desire....Muslim men are also urged to be modest and to cover themselves between the waist and the knees

I had commented same thing long ago that at least allow the burqa in a colour that matches with the school uniform.
I think here the issue is not burqa, but it is face veil.

Covering the face should be banned even in all the malls in mangalore and other public places. One can cover their head on religious grounds but not the face which is the main identity of a person when it comes to security issues.

It is the decision of the School and College to about the dress code . If students agree for the rules and regulations and joining the institution no problem will rise. But Politics should not come in middle of this. Please don't mix Religion and education together.
