Udupi, Apr 5: The JD(S) filed a complaint with the election officer of Udupi–Chikmaglur constituency, seeking action against Udupi MLA Raghupathy Bhat for violating the election code of conduct by enticing voters and misusing governmental programmes on Saturday April 4.

The MLA had announced the provision of Rs 3.18 lac to 25 sick people from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund in a media release on Friday April 3.

“The party and candidate must not entice voters through governmental programmes. Misusing governmental programmes is against the moral code and is an offense. Hence, strict action must be taken against the offender”, urged Devi Prasad Shetty, district president, JD(S).

Speaking to media persons, Udupi deputy commissioner P Hemalata said that the funds were released before the election procedures and the statements made will not be considered as publicity or advertisements.

She added that if the funds were released after the announcement of election procedures, it could be considered as an offence and it was even possible to take strict action against the offender.
