Bantwal, May 17: Water scarcity that is being faced in Mangaluru has affected Bantwal also. A decision is taken to supply drinking water once in two days here.

The drying up of Netravati river is the main reason. Water should be lifted from the river in order to make it flow in the pipes supplying water. The scarcity is felt there itself. It is well known that water is scarce due to natural abnormality.

Sand mixed mud has filled on either sides of Intec well situated in between the river. The water that gets mixed with mud when water gets over should be supplied to jackwell, filtered and sent in pipes. There should be sufficient fount of water for it which is not found at present.

Municipal water supply board engineer Shubhalaxmi said that the work of disposing of the part mixed with mud and sand and increasing the flow of water has begun. Meanwhile the council has announced rationing of water once in two days. It is better for council residents to use water with care.

MLA’s visit

Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik Ulippady visited jackwell area on Thursday afternoon. Water supply was stopped in the council limits since Thursday morning. The MLA visited jackwell area and conducted inspection. He held talks with water board engineer Shubhalaxmi and municipal council engineer Dominic D’ Mello and asked them to take quick action for supply of water.

Speaking to news reporters, he said that water cannot be lifted up through jackwell as the water level has dropped. “Water will be collected by means of a bund near well for the time being and pumped. There is information that there is sufficient water near old jackwell. The engineers are asked to supply it. The problem will be solved without putting people to hardship,” he said.

Municipal Councillor Govinda Prabhu, former Councillor Bhasker tailor, engineer Thejomurthy, Sudarshan Baja and others were present.
