Udupi, Apr 21: In the wee hours on Tuesday April 21, robbers struck in Padebettu area of Padubidri and robbed ornaments worth about Rs 2.5 lac from six houses located between Yermal Tenka Narantaya shrine to Padebettu Vishnumurty temple. The incident has occurred close on the heels of similar serial robbery that took place in Uppoor village on the night of Saturday April 18.

It is said, the thieves who forced their entry into a house near Narantaya shrine could get only Rs 200. As people of the next home got up when they were trying to sneak in, the thieves ran away. After some time, they entered the home of Hosmane Shyam Shetty and forcibly took away the golden chain worn by the housemaid there.

Two masked men broke open the back door of the house of Padebettu Omaiah Shetty, hit Shetty and his son with the iron rod, when they resisted and snatched away gold ornaments worn by the women. Omaiah Shetty and his son suffered injuries.

They then entered the home of Yogish Poojary of Kattapuni Madu House, and snatched chains from the necks of four women, weighing about 12 sovereigns. One of the women caught the thief tight, but he managed to escape after dragging her for some distance.

It is said, that the robbers wore only shorts and had applied oil to their bodies. At each house, two robbers entered the home while the others stood guard outside. This indicates that they were well-versed in robbery and worked to a plan. Eye witnesses said the robbers sped towards the railway tracks after completing their task. Before fleeing, the robbers left behind a bag containing some saris and other things in the fields.
