Mumbai, Jun 6: The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board recently requested the residents of 23 ceased buildings in Colaba-Mahim-Sion stretch to vacate, since the buildings are too old and dangerous to reside. Though 197 out of 800 people in the 23 buildings have shifted to other safe places, the rest of the residents are still living there.

The chief officer of the board, Dinkar Jagdale, issued a list of all the 23 buildings where over 800 residents are currently living. Of these, 197 have been shifted to other places. The board is trying to make some alternative accommodation available for the remaining residents.

"The board offers temporary alternative accommodation in its transit camp for the residents of dangerous, collapsed or under repair buildings. As and when needed, the board issues notices to vacate the premises of the most dangerous buildings, intending to save lives and properties," said the chief officer of the board, Dinkar Jagdale in a statement issued.

The board requested the residents to cooperate and vacate the building as early as possible so that they can start the demolition of dangerous parts and propping. The board also warned the residents to immediately inform them if any signs of widening of existing cracks, parts of the ceiling falling down, the floor separating from the wall columns are noticed.

499 buildings have been categorized as dangerous and enlisted in C1 category in a pre-monsoon survey conducted by the BMC this year. BMC classifies buildings in three categories: C1 (most dangerous), C2 (needs major structural repairs), and C3 (needs minor repairs).
