Sullia, May 11: Venkatramana Gowda (35) and his wife Rajeevi (28) from Yedamangala near Subrahmanya in the taluk committed suicide by consuming poison on Saturday May 9. They also fed poison to their 18-month-old daughter, Nandita. The incident occurred when the two elder school-going daughters of the couple were spending time with their grandparents in Shantigodu village on account of summer holidays.

The couple eked out a living by working as labourers. However, persisting illness since some time had heaped miseries on them, it is learnt. Both of them had been treated at the Puttur government hospital due to sickness and were discharged from the hospital on May 8. The frustrated couple consumed poison on the night of May 9, presumably after feeding poison to the child.

The Subrahmanya policemen have registered Venkatramana Gowda's death as suicide, while the death of Rajeevi and her child, as murder, committed by Venkatramana Gowda by feeding poison to the two.

They should change their attitudes towards serving the starving, ill fated, socially and economically backward, unemployed and the needy one''s. If they changed their goals towards securing harmony, peace they could save many more lives in the future. Le us build strong secular India.
