Udupi, Jul 2: P L Dharma, HOD of journalism section, Mangalore University opined that media is working as the strong force of questioning democracy in modern India.

Dharma was speaking after inaugurating the Newspaper Day celebration organized jointly by Udupi district working journalists' organization and Press Club at the Jagannatha Auditorium on Monday, July 1.

Dharma further said, "There is a system in place in the country because of the fundamental questions posed by the journalists. Otherwise, there would have been chaos in the country. If a person fears that his name should not appear for wrong reasons in the newspaper, it means that the reason for that is the fundamental questions posed by the journalists. Because of the journalists, people’s representatives, educational institutions and government officers are working responsibly."

Dharma also said that younger generation has to occupy government positions. They should aim of becoming IAS and IPS officers and thereby work for the betterment of the people who are living in the lower strata of the society.

Gokuldas Pai, district Rajyotsava award winner, Laxmi Macchina, winner of annual award of state organization, Mohammed Ismail, newspaper distributor and brilliant students were felicitated during the programme. Scholarship was distributed for students of journalism.

Ganeshprasad Pandelu, president of district working journalists' organization presided over the function.

Senior photographer of Mysuru G K Hegde, CEO of Badagabettu credit cooperative society Jayakar Shetty Indrali, state committee member Kiran Manjanabailu, convener of press club Nagaraj Rao and treasurer Divakar Hiriyadka were present.

Michael Rodrigues welcomed the gathering. Santhosh Saralabettu, secretary of the association rendered the vote of thanks. Chethan compered the programme.
