Udupi, Jul 2: “Cattle thefts have increased in rural area of the coast during the onset of monsoon as every year. Failure of the state government and the police department are responsible for it. If the negligence of the government continues like this, violent protests may recur in the district like during 2005,” warned BJP district chief secretary Yashpal Suvarna.

“The chief minister instead of staying in luxury hotels, going to villages in the mornings, receiving petitions and obtaining publicity, should go to the coast and listen to the grievances of dairymen. Those who are rearing cows here have to live in fear at nights. The political parties are openly supporting robbers with deadly weapons who take away the cattle.

“The talk of Congress leaders works in police stations. If a few youth try to protect cattle, they are being silenced by Goonda Act. Entire system works for cattle thieves as they belong to a particular community. The frustration of Hindu community may take the shape of violent protests.

“The police department should immediately close illegal abattoirs, arrest cow thieves and send them to exile if they are concerned about law and order. False cases against Hindu activists should be withdrawn and their pro society activities should be supported. Police check posts in all the villages should be strengthened. Work of corrupt police officials should be investigated. The state government should not interfere in police department.”

“Several youth who had gone to prevent cattle slaughter have lost their lives. Cattle slaughters have not decreased even after several campaigns. If the state government and district administration fails to take serious action, the grim situation seen in the coast from 2003 to 2005 may raise its head again. The police department should not give room for it,” he said in the press release.
