Mangaluru, Jul 3: A man who won over the confidence of a girl by promising to marry her, raped her, and refused to marry her after fathering a female child through her, was found guilty and sentenced by the sixth additional district and sessions court.
Umesh (34) from Narimogaru in Puttur taluk, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment in total and fined Rs 70,000 for the said offence through a judgement delivered on Tuesday July 2.
When working as supplier in a hotel at Narimogaru in the year 2009, Umesh reportedly befriended a female bidi worker living near his hotel. He acted like being in love with her, and raped her after promising to marry her, it is said. She turned pregnant and gave birth to a female child at Lady Goschen hospital here in 2010.
As Umesh refused to keep up his promise of marriage thereafter, the lady and her mother filed a complaint in the town police station at Puttur. A case relating to the offence was filed in JMFC court at Puttur. The then police inspector, M Ravikumar, conducted the probe and filed charge sheet in the court. During the DNA test, it was proved that Umesh was the biological father of the child. Thereafter, the case was transferred to the sixth additional district and sessions court here.
Out of a fine of Rs 70,000 imposed on Umesh, Rs 50,000 has been ordered to be disbursed to the victim. Umesh has also been ordered to deposit one lac rupees in the name of the child for her use in the future. Besides, he has to pay monthly maintenance charges of the child.
Public prosecutor, Judith O M Crasta, had appeared in the case on behalf of the prosecution.
