Beltangady, Jun 3: The city court on Tuesday June 2 remanded 73-year-old Ramesh Achary to 15 days judicial custody. Ramesh is accused of illegally manufacturing country guns at Kavalamudoor, in Bantwal taluk.

The police once again searched his entire premises and recovered a total of 12 country guns, 16 barrels, three unfinished gun handles carved out of logs, five numbers of foot rulers, barrel cleaning equipment, two hammers, four brass trigger guards, mobile kiln, and other items.

The police have intensified the search for Ramesh’s son Shankar Achary who managed to escape during the raid at their illegal gun manufacturing workshop.

The workshop lies a kilometre from Mudurupadur Kambla venue on Dharmasthala– Mangalore Road, on N C Road.  The accused had set up a kiln in a shed on the plantation adjoining his house.

He was making the barrels by casting iron and creating wooden handles out of logs.  When the police arrived at his workshop in uniforms, the accused Ramesh could not recognize them and asked them to come inside, leaving behind their footwear.

Ramesh thought the policemen were customers who had come to buy his country guns.  Ramesh was a disabled person and had a license to repair guns which had expired long ago.  He is believed to have been engaged in this illegal trade by manufacturing and supplying country guns both in and around the neighbouring taluks.

The raid on the illegal country gun manufacturing workshop was carried out jointly by personnel of the Anti Naxal Force (ANF) and police.  It was conducted under the direction of superintendent of police Dr Subramanyeshwar Rao, additional superintendent of police Dilip Kumar and Dr Ramachandra Gupta by sub-inspector B G Subba Puramat, assistant sub-inspector Giriappa, Venkappa Shetty, head constables Sanjeev Kaleimar and Selva Dorai, police constables Kamalaksha, Shivanand, Rajesh, Poulose, Ramachandra, Venkatesh, Rajesh, Dayanand, Vishwanat, Uday and jeep driver Raghuram.
