Mangalore, Jun 5:  The Little Sisters of the Poor celebrated the 104th birthday of their resident Cecilia D’Souza in Bajjody on Friday June 5.

Cecilia’s birthday celebration saw the nuns, guests, and residents of the home wishing her with a big round of applause and singing ‘Happy Birthday’.

Born on June 5, 1905, Cecilia is the daughter of the Julian and Mary Magdalene D’Souza. Being a spinster, she along with her brother, joined the home on August 9, 1993.

Sisters in the home said that Cecilia is still young at heart and they do consider her old. They added that she always has a very positive attitude towards life, is joyful, has no complaints and is never grumpy but is always grateful for whatever is given to her.

Fr Boniface D’Souza, Fr Stany Pereira, and Fr Godwin Sequeira, were the invitees on the occasion. Robert Machado and family sponsored a tea party for the celebration.

A magic show by Fr Ivan Madtha was also arranged as part of the entertainment on the occasion.

Little Sisters of the Poor was founded by Jeanne Jugan (1792-1879), a nurse, in 1839 by bringing a blind, paralyzed, woman into her home and giving up her bed for the guest’s comfort. Canonization for Jeanne Jugan will be on October 11, 2009.
