Mangalore, Jun 8: Incessant rains continued to lash the undivided Dakshina Kannada (DK) district on Saturday June 6.

Although it has rained heavily across the city and its suburbs, no incidents of damage have been reported so far except the uprooting of a large tree located near St Ann’s Education Institution here which fell on the road on Saturday June 6.

It was cleared by the police with the assistance of a crane.

The local fishermen have stopped fishing in the turbulent sea after the ban on fishing in coastal waters was enforced by the district administration a few days ago.  Sources from the fisheries department said that the fishermen who had ventured into the sea prior to the ban are retuning to the shore.

Udupi District:

The torrential rains coupled with heavy gales continued to lash the district since Saturday June 6.

The rains which had been lashing the district since Saturday morning stopped for a while in the afternoon though it started raining again on Saturday evening. The cloudy weather and heavy rains obscured the sunset.

Four houses across the taluk here were partially damaged in the heavy winds and rains.  The houses of Bijilu, Harady village, Seena Suvarna, Mattu village, and Muttu, Kediyoor–Kuppettu, were partially damaged after a large banyan tree fell on the house of Sharada in Kuppettu, near here.

A large tree also fell on a speeding passenger bus at Tekkatte in Kundapur taluk. But the driver managed to maneuver the bus to safety.  It was the presence of mind of the bus driver that saved the passengers.

About 30 palms were uprooted all along the coast from Shiroor to Kodi in Kundapur taluk.
