Mangalore, Jun 8: Home minister Dr V S Acharya informed that  the government will soon take a decision, in consultation with the senior officials of the concerned departments, to frame a new law in place of the earlier act without inviting legal wrangles, to ensure that the long-existing Mulgeni system is abolished. He was addressing a public awareness meeting organized by Mulgeni Tenants Protection Forum in the city on Sunday June 7.

"A number of debates and discussions have taken place at the government level on the issue of doing away with Mulgeni system. As amending the existing will invite some legal wrangles, the government is actively considering coming out with a new act," he explained. Responding to the plea of the Forum to take steps against the Mulgeni system cases from being reckoned under the Rent Act, Dr Acharya said, a decision would soon be taken after holding discussions at the government level.

In his inaugural address, MLA N Yogish Bhat informed, that details are being pooled to do away with the Mulgeni system. When M C Nanaiah was the revenue minister, he had been convinced of the need to abolish this system. The government will take steps on priority to discard this system. The compensation, to which the affected persons are eligible, should be disbursed through courts, he added.

District Raita Sangh general secretary Yadav Shetty said, thousands of people are suffering because of the Mulgeni system and that middlemen have been encashing the opportunity in a big way. More serious movements may be necessary against this system to get tangible results, he opined.

MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, BJP district president Monappa Bhandary and Congress Party leader Stevan Vincent participated as chief guests. Legal advisor of the Forum Gourishankar and Forum president Maxim D'Silva were at the dais.
