Mangalore: Monsoon Continues to be Intense: Kota Receives 11 cm Rainfall

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 9: Rain continued to lash the twin-districts on Monday June 8, even though there were brief breaks in the rainfall. Kota in Udupi district received highest rainfall of 11 cms. Not only the coast, even some places located within the northern and southern hinterlands got good rains on Monday.

Gulbarga recorded 11 cm rain, the city got 7 cms while Haliyal in Uttara Kannada district got 9 cm rain. The meteorological department has predicted the heavy rains to continue.

The problem of sea erosion has started haunting the residents of Kaup coast, with huge waves whipping the shore relentlessly. The indications of sea erosion were seen in several places in this region, like Muloor, Ucchila, Yermal and Udyavar. Several boulders stacked as protective walls have started slipping into the depths of the sea.  The sea has been particularly aggressive near the houses of N C Mendon and Sundari in Muloor, where waves have been advancing, forcing the boulders and soil to collapse and erode. Their coconut gardens are facing immediate danger.

The fishermen feel, the district administration can stop the advancing sea if it starts heaping the boulders at the initial stage itself, rather than waiting for the situation to worsen.
