Mangalore: Rickshaw Drivers Seek Facilities through Post-card Movement

Mangalore, Jun 10: The rickshaw drivers of city initiated their post-card movement, by posting individual post cards containing a list of their demands, to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa here on Tuesday June 9. The programme was organized under the aegis of the Coordination Committee of Dakshina Kannada District Rickshaw Drivers Organizations, in front of the Pandeshwar main post office here.

Addressing the rickshaw drivers gathered on the occasion, vice president of the Committee Ashok Shetty pointed out that neighbouring Kerala and Tamil Nadu states have extended several facilities to the rickshaw drivers, who belong to unorganized sector. As in those states, the rickshaw drivers here too demand for facilities like pension, provident fund, employees’ state insurance, BPL ration card, free house sites and scholarships to the children of rickshaw drivers, he explained.

"Instead of resorting to agitational path, we have decided to directly attract the attention of the Chief Minister to our demands, through these post-cards. The movement will continue till August 15. Rickshaw drivers from Suratkal, Ullal, Tokkottu and other places will also mail their post-cards to the Chief Ministers on these lines at their places, he added.

Committee vice president Abubakker Suratkal, general secretary Vishnmurti, treasurer Hassan Ali Kudroli and joint secretary Prakash Syrian were present.
