Bangalore, Jun 11: After a six-year old child died after falling into an uncovered rain flooded drain May 31 in this tech hub in Karnataka, another person died Wednesday night after the city witnessed heavy down pour, an official said Thursday.
A 39-year-old man, was found dead in a pool of rain water in Kamala Nagar. The identity of the person is yet to be confirmed by the police.
In Ejipura locality, eight houses collapsed and around 40 people were rendered homeless.
The rain which began in 9.45 p.m. continued for two hours and the entire city went out of gear.
Director of meteorological department A. Muthuchami, told IANS that on Wednesday Bangalore received 89.6 mm of rainfall.
"This is monsoon season and the city is bound to get heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming few days," the director informed
All the roads including M.G. Road, Double Road, Vittal Mallya Road, Old Madras Road and Old Airport Road were flooded by rain water.
The city's low lying areas, mainly the eastern and the western parts, were worst affected as water from drains, flooded by rain, entered the houses of the residents.
Angry residents of Ejipura, Modi Garden in Kaval Byrasandra, Kasavanahalli, off Sarjapura Road, Girinagar, Peenya, Austin Town, Okalipuram, Magadi Road police quarters and other localities, where houses were flooded, complained against the city's civic body BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika) for dereliction of duty.
"The city turns into a hell whenever there are rains. My home is in knee deep water and it's all drain water that has entered inside. Several of my valuables have been damaged. The government has failed to provide basic civic amenities to the Bangaloreans," Vikash Prasad, a resident of Austin Town, told IANS.
"This is regular ritual in Bangalore during rainy season. The entire city goes haywire during rains, flooding roads and houses. It's sad and the administration needs to work towards the betterment of the city's infrastructure," rued Pallavi Mohan, a resident of Brigade Road.
However, officials of the BBMP have refused to make any comments on the worsening of city's civic amenities and infrastructure.
The meteorological department has warned of more rain Thursday.
