Beltangady: Ore Trucks again Intrude into Forbidden Charmadi Ghat Road

Beltangady, Jun 12: Taking into account problems being encountered by the people of the region, after the Charmadi Ghat road was closed for repairs three months ago, the state government had reopened the road for traffic on June 10, even though a lot of work still remains to be executed. The government had specifically said that heavy vehicles barring buses, trucks etc were not allowed to ply on the road till the remaining work was taken up and completed after the rainy season.

However, on the first day of the reopening of the road, queues of ore trucks which carry heavy loads were seen plying on the road. Trucks, tankers etc are barred from using this road, but the ore trucks which are the heaviest among them, used this road with carefree recklessness. It is learnt, there was no one to check their movement. Large lines of ore trucks were seen on the Charmadi Ghat road on the night of Wednesday.

Many works are pending at the dangerous bends of the Ghat section. The movement of heavy vehicle is likely to cause damage to the road at these bends due to which, there are chances that the people might be deprived of the road again, if no measures to control their movement are undertaken immediately.

Satyamurty, executive director of Singa Engineering Company which is executing the road works, has warned, that heavy vehicles can engineer fresh landslides at dangerous bends for which this road is famous.

The people are apprehensive that the road will be closed for traffic again because of the damage being caused by heavy vehicles, particularly the ore trucks, thus inflicting untold miseries on them. Before that happens, the district administration has to wake to the need of the hour and enforce the ban on the movement of heavy vehicles on Charmadi Ghat Road.
