Mangalore, Jun 13:  Mangalore Ladies Circle is a part of an international social service organization, comprising of the wives of the members of the Round Table. Ever since its charter in the year 2001, the local unit of the Ladies Circle has been active in the field of taking up social causes and dealing with them affectively. They have covered areas like education, women’s rights, mentally handicapped and the environment etc., and contributed towards addressing these issues.
 
The commitment of Mangalore Ladies Circle towards environment conservation has been a long-standing one. From imparting environmental education to students in schools to the promotion of the usage of 'newspaper carry bags', planting of trees and development of parks, the Circle has always tried to get actively involved with social causes.

The year 2009 has seen the Mangalore Ladies Circle execute a number of projects for the environment, which include 'Save the Park' campaign on January 26, involving weeding and provided park benches at the Urwa Stores Park, which was in a state of total neglect. 'Save our Planet' was the topic of a series of drawing competitions held at various schools of city under the aegis of the organization. This project has succeeded in its objective of creating awareness among the students about the importance of conserving environment.

Through its 'Go Green 2009' project, the Circle distributed medicinal plants, saplings of many local varieties of trees, procured from the department of horticulture, to various volunteers and schools who were willing to plant the same and tend for them. Tincture, aloe vera, papaya, brahmi, insulin, stevia, tulsi, mint, noni, shanku  pushpa, drumstick, lemon, phylanthus and amaranthus were a few of the plant species distributed under the project.
 
The city unit of Ladies Circle celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 this year, in the company of Cr Uma, national president of the organization, by planting saplings in a few government schools.

Newspaper Bags: Mangalore Ladies Circle has been collecting and donating newspapers to 'Prajna Counselling Centre' that has been involved with the making of these bags. The bags so prepared are then distributed to shops in and around the city, for encouraging the use of environment-friendly paper bags and to discourage the use of environmentally detrimental plastic bags. This project has succeeded in generating income for the destitute women of Prajna Counselling Centre, contributing to the economic empowerment of these women.
