Mangalore, Jun 13:
A portion of a house near Bajjodi in Bikarnakatte in the city, belonging to the family of the late Joseph Saldanha collapsed due to the incessant water flow that rendered the foundation weak, on Saturday, June 13

A part of the house comprising of two rooms crashed to the ground at noon on Saturday. The incident also resulted in damage to several things inside the two rooms. The collapsing walls also spread the debris to the adjacent house. However, no damage to that house has been reported.

The water streaming down from the hilly terrain located behind the house in question during the rainy season was the reason for the collapse of the walls, said one of the residents, Roopa saldanha. The neighbourers also said that the foundation of the house that was damaged due to the soggy earth, caused by the water flow, was the reason for the incident.

The two women residing inside the house at the time were alerted by the sound of the crash. They escaped unhurt by quickly venturing out of the house.

At the time of the incident, there was no rain. But it is said that, the heavy rain received in the recent days had caused the foundation to loose strength.

The loss due to the collapse has been estimated at three lac rupees. The people of the locality have urged the City Corporation to take preventive measures to divert the water flow from the hill area, to avoid recurrence of such incidents during the rainy season.
